By the Time You Read This by Giles Blunt
Detective John Cardinal's wife of thirty years jumps from the top of a ten story condominium building after years of depression. Her fragile mental condition suggests suicide, but was it really? Cardinal, a seasoned veteran of Algonquin Bay's police force, doesn't buy this pat conclusion, and has to convince his coworkers that it's not just bereavement clouding his judgment.
Welcome to the fast-paced underbelly of sedate Algonquin Bay, Ontario, where the crisp fallen leaves aren't the only things dropping like flies. In addition to Cardinal's wife's demise, there are other
suspicious "suicides" that happen way too frequently. On top of this, Cardinal's work partner Detective Delorme is involved in a child pornography case that gets creepier by the page. How do these stories intertwine? Well and masterfully, in this gem of a thriller.
For years, I rarely read this genre of fiction, but in recent times, I have hit some winners, and and I'd include this book among them. It's well written and Blunt conveys well the feeling of the grieving Detective Cardinal. After reading this one, I am very inclined to go back through his work. You can too, here at the library.
